It’s time to put your public land values into action

Last spring, through our public lands survey, over 1,400 of you shared your thoughts about some of Montana’s most pressing public lands issues – things like transfer, public access, wildlife habitat, clean water, and so much more.

Using your feedback on your top priorities for public lands and the primary threats they face, we’ve put together these resources to ensure that you have the information you need to vote for Supreme Court justices and state legislators who share your public land values.

Please note – the rules around voter registration, voter ID, and more have changed a number of times this year based on ongoing litigation. Please check voteinmt.org for the most current information.

THE RACES

State Supreme Court

The State Supreme Court race between incumbent Ingrid Gustafson and challenger James Brown is a crucial race for the future of our public lands: our constitutionally guaranteed right to a “clean and healthful environment” is at stake.

Justice Ingrid Gustafson has 20 years of judicial experience, including five years on the Montana Supreme Court. She is an impartial judge with a long track record of protecting our public lands so we can continue to hike, hunt, fish, and spend time outdoors with our families.

Her challenger is James Brown. Brown has never been a judge, but he has served as a lawyer and lobbyist for special interest groups who support public land transfer, want to defund the Environmental Protection Agency, and oppose the Land and Water Conservation Fund.

It’s obvious that Gustafson is the better choice to protect public lands, clean water, and our right to access and enjoy them. We can’t trust Brown, with his long history of supporting and working for organizations that are trying to take away public lands, to defend our “clean and healthful environment.”

For a more in-depth discussion of this race and its impacts on public lands, we encourage you to read our blog.

State Legislature

Each even-numbered year, all 100 Montana state House seats are up for election as well as 25 of the 50 Senate seats. We have put together this legislative scorecard to show how your legislators have voted on bills impacting the public lands issues you care about most.

Please note, if a candidate is not an incumbent and did not serve in the 2021 Montana Legislature, they will not have a voting record included here. However, more information – including information on candidates who did not serve in 2021 – can be found in the answers to our Primary Voter Guide Questionnaire.

Please note: some bills did not make it to a vote in the other chamber. In these cases, we’ve left the vote tally box blank.
